There are two cases that stick out in my mind involving the Black Panthers: the Marin Court Shootout and this case. I was 17 when Betty Van Patter was murdered. I am originally from Richmond, but I wasn’t living there when this happened. However, I always kept up with the news from that area. So this case was the subject of discussion in our household for weeks. This has always fascinated me so I have read a lot on this case. However, in this article you brought to light some new information I had not previously heard. Every other article I read, mentioned that Betty Van Patter was sitting at the bar, but none of the others mentioned that she was crying softly to herself before getting the note and leaving for the Lamp Post Bar.

Thank you for the update and a great article. I just like to say my heart goes out to the the Van Patter family. Betty was a very courageous women.

Dwayne, I've shared your comment with Betty's three children and they appreciate it. As you can imagine, after 49 years they are grateful when anyone remembers their mother's unsolved case. So thank you for reading the essay and posting your comment!
