Everything you mention has been on my mind as I get close to the end of my teaching career after 40 years of it, entwined with my ambitions — inspired by you — to do immersive explanatory journalism. As parents our most important trick is to work ourselves out of that job. But, like the kicker to your account suggests, there can be these moments of grace. So glad you got yourself out of that skilled nursing place and back with your family. Your grandchildren are lucky (and so, of course are you).
