Great essay this morning, David. We all need oatmeal, and connection, and some sort of spiritual meaning. Unfortunately, our once-great nation is turning its back on some of those things, or crying out for them in a most inappropriate and self-destructive manner. Let's hope we can work to connect, heal, convince, resist, and otherwise provide nourishment that sticks to the bones and the soul.

The question you ask a greedy person is "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" They always say "no".

The question you ask a wise person is, 'What would be best for our collective future?"

In America, greed always trumps wisdom.

Seems to be true. But maybe more universally than just in America. Other nations are already authoritarian -- China, Russia, Hungary, Turkey, etc. -- or leaning that way. France and Italy have very strong right-wing parties. Israel too. Greed, and fear, feed these types of political structures. Probably fear more so.
