A very sad state of affairs. But, ultimately, if people don't care about being informed they won't be. And democracy will die, because it depends on having an informed, engaged electorate. Many institutions have failed in major ways to bring us to this point: Schools, colleges, the media itself, the business world (which isn't exactly helping save independent journalism), religion, and more. Here in Portland, Oregon, the Oregonian does a very good job of digging up what happens out of sight and behind closed doors in Oregon's political world, state and city agencies, etc. If it were gone, who would take up the gauntlet? And if it were gone, politicians and officials of both major parties would have little or no public scrutiny of their activities, broken promises, and often inept performance. The whole situation is tragic, really.
